Maria Jose, a Mexican DrPH candidate in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at The George Washington University, combines medical expertise with a passion for environmental advocacy in her research and professional projects. After completing her medical training in Mexico and practicing medicine, she transitioned to a career in Environmental Health. Her work centers on toxic exposures and environmental justice issues in low- and middle-income countries, where she actively promotes environmental health policy initiatives. In her pursuit of environmental justice globally, Maria highlights the disproportionate impact of globalization and trade on toxic exposures in poorer countries. Outside of academia, Maria dedicates her free time to raising awareness of environmental health issues in Spanish through social media platforms. She finds joy in cooking, visiting family in Mexico and hiking various trails around Virginia.
